A red dot, vagyis vöröspontos irányzék a látómezőben megjelenő világító irányzóponttal segíti a gyors célfelvételt. Az 1×-es modellek optikai nagyítás nélkül használhatók, így mindkét szem nyitva tartható, ami széles látómezőt és gyors tájékozódást tesz lehetővé.
A red dot irányzékok nyitott és zárt kialakítással is készülhetnek. A nyitott változatok jellemzően egyszerűbb, kompakt felépítésűek, míg a zárt házas modellek nagyobb védelmet nyújtanak a fényforrás és az optikai rendszer számára a porral, nedvességgel és más szennyeződésekkel szemben.
Választáskor érdemes figyelembe venni az irányzópont MOA-méretét, a fényerő szabályozását, az üzemidőt, a méretet és a rögzítés módját. A kisebb MOA-értékű pont kevésbé takarja ki a célt, míg a nagyobb pont könnyebben észrevehető lehet. Vásárlás előtt mindig ellenőrizni kell, hogy az irányzék talpkialakítása és a választott szerelék kompatibilis-e az adott rendszerrel.
